Participating in the protests last month was a great experience. It was a good opportunity to meet new people, have semi-serious fun with friends and to even learn a little protest Romanian.
Some of my favorite chants were:
“PSD – ciuma roşie!” Social Democrat Party – the red plague!
“Cine nu sare, nu vrea schimbare!” Who(ever) doesn’t jump doesn’t want change!
and “Ieşiţi din casă dacă vă pasă!” Come out of your homes if you care!
*Mistakes all mine 🙂
Whenever the second chant broke out, everyone began jumping together, which was a nice way to warm up in the cold. Regarding the third, it was fun to see protesters shining their flashlights and laser pointers into the lit windows at people still at home. It wasn’t an attempt to intimidate but rather an effort to get everyone involved.
Speaking of solidarity, my favorite moment during the two nights when we participated was when the protesters broke out in applause when passing by a police station. The police standing casually out front were not threatening or being threatened. There was a sense of camaraderie that’s sadly missing in the U.S. these days.
It was a nice farewell from Cluj, my home for the last year and a half.
